Chapter Six

Taylor wanted to throw himself into Nicky’s arms. Christ. His last three days had sucked ass. He’d seen the depths of human destruction and his mind hadn’t healed. The display had stuck with him and he needed to know there was kindness out there after all. Memories of his past came creeping back. Fuck. He’d have to deal with his scars one of these days and he’d have to tell Nicky the truth about what he’d gone through. Just not right now.

“Well?” Nicky fidgeted with Nagy’s leash. “I really don’t want to be arrested. I’d rather get the hell out of here.”

“You’re not doing anything wrong,” Taylor said. “She’s being belligerent.”

“You thought Nagy and I weren’t what you had in mind.” Nicky pinched the bridge of his nose. “I need to go.”

Taylor couldn’t let Nicky leave—not yet. “It’s not the same—not anymore. I know you. I know the man inside.”

Nicky shook his head. “We can talk anywhere else but here. I’m going.”

Taylor spotted a police car. Well, fuck. He should’ve known the woman would follow through with her threat. When he turned back to Nicky, the man had fled the scene. Taylor suppressed a growl. He knew why Nicky was gone—unfair persecution. He was innocent. The cops never should’ve been involved. Taylor ventured over to the woman and flashed his media credentials.

“Hi, I’m Taylor Fyre, lead reporter for the Collinwood Chronicle. I’m doing a story on the dog park,” he said. “I’d like to get your input.”

“You would?” She grinned. Her whole demeanor changed. “What would you like to know?”

“What are your views on the Collinwood Dog Park? Would you encourage another park of this type opening?”

“I love it here. We need more,” she said. “I wish there were one a bit closer to my neighborhood, but I like bringing my Spot here.”

“You’d like another opened,” he said and jotted notes on his notepad. “Just because it’s too far away from home?” He had to pander to her.

“Yes, but also so the village can have a park for the dangerous dogs,” she said. “I don’t like them mixed. I don’t want to worry about my dog being hurt.”

“Has your dog been attacked here?” Taylor asked. If he pushed, he could get her to come clean. He kept writing notes. “I’ve not come across any reports of attacks here. I’ve done my research.”

“No one reports it.” She narrowed her eyes. Had she figured him out?

“Have you seen them? Have you been a witness?”

“No.”

He hadn’t thought so. “Then how can you claim there are attacks?” he asked. “Just so I have the story correct. I don’t want to have the wrong information.”

“I’ve heard about it,” she said. “We all talk. It’s best to keep an eye on each other.”

“Very good.” He needed to stay calm. He’d caught her in a lie. He seethed because she had no proof. “So if you were to create your perfect dog park, what would you include?”

She tipped her head and didn’t answer right away. “We have children who visit the park, so I’d want background checks.
